HURTING WOMEN

I really liked this essay. The author may have come off a little strong, but I think she did a wonderful job backing up her entire argument with the actual photographs of advertisements. The presence of those advertisements allowed her reader to see exactly what she was talking about and it gave her essay a lot more credibility.

In her essay Kilbourne mentioned that although sexual advertisements don't create negative behavior they definitely affect it. I agree with her on that point, like it or not these images affect all of us. They make us numb, we are no longer as shocked to images like this and it gets to a point were we perceive them as normal.

Just imagine all of the little kids that live in Las Vegas, they have to see very suggestive and down right pornographic billboards everyday. Its quite sad to see how sex is marketed in our society to sell products even to very young children.

  1. Thank you for your comment I appreciate it. I feel that Kilbourne has so many good points about sex and women in advertising. I also think that how women are portrayed is sad, and I dont like the fact that they use women vicimization sexually to sell sometimes. The thing I didnt understand about her piece, and the thing no one has been able to answer for me is how she ties women being raped, scared to go in elevators, and checking under the car or the back seat with advertising. Women did that and raping happened tons way before television, magazines or ads. The reason that stuff happens is because of males and females genetic makeup. would any adult be afraid of a child physically overpowering them? The answer is no 999 times out of 1000. why? because the majority of childeren are small and not as strong in comparison to an adult. Why dont adult men think about what they do to prevent from being sexually assaulted? Because The majority of males are stronger physically than women. Why do women think of this often and why are they scared often? because men, the majority of the time, are stronger physically than women. Advertising has nothing to do with these ideas she brought up. Men need to be responsible for the sheer physical dominince they have on women. Im not being a male shovinist, its just the facts. men need to respect women and advertising isnt the reason women fear being raped or being alone with a strange man. it is the sheer physical dominance.that a man has over her. There are exceptions to every rule but were talking majority here. Again thank you so much for your comment. it sparked alot of thought within me! Good insight!
